A global research team has been able to efficiently provide potable water that could potential help millions of lives across the world. They were capable of transforming brackish and seawater into clean drinking water in less than 30 minutes through sunlight and metal-organic frameworks also known as MOFs. This is a remarkable breakthrough that could filter harmful particles from water in an efficient way for a vast number of the earth’s population. A great discovery simply that may revolutionize life on earth forever. According to the World Health Organization quality drinking water should have a total dissolved solid less than 600 parts per million (ppm) and this team was able to crush this standard by over 100 ppm achieving a total less than 500 ppm. What’s most impressive is the use of sunlight rather than thermal energy in this operation which is environmentally-sustainable for desalination of the water.

One of the members of the research team said, “Sunlight is the most abundant and renewable source of energy on Earth. Our development of a new adsorbent-based desalination process through the use of sunlight for regeneration provides an energy-efficient and environmentally-sustainable solution for desalination.” This technology may just be what we need for a brighter future for the next generation and hopefully it will be placed in the right hands for a good use.
