Journal #3 Principles for ethical communication

Clear writing and communication helps your audience understand your message easily. Often as engineers you’ll need to communicate the work you’re working on to your peers or outsiders who may not be understanding of the technical aspects as you are. So being able to communicate your message in a clear concise way can and will avoid misunderstandings and also accelerate projects. A common mistake I see not only in youths but also adults is the use of unnecessary “big words” while communicating, to give the impression of being eloquent and sophisticated. Now it’s important to understand that there are times for the use of such words but in a professional engineering environment what will be required of you is to express the technicality of an idea or project by breaking it down in a clear and concise manner. Now imagine being a phenomenal engineer yet not having good communication skills to convey your idea of a project you’re working on to your manager or the finance people. Although you’re capable of carrying out that project, you will most likely be rejected and not funded. On the other hand, engineers with good communication skills who can thoroughly explain their projects will be funded thanks to their ability to lay down their plan effectively. So it is important to learn how to explain complex technical things to non-technical people in a clear manner.
