For this week we had to write an engineering proposal about something quite important pertaining to NYC. I decided to address the issue of pollution in NYC and how transportation plays a role in this unsanitary matter that has come to attack this city. Although we have an efficient public transportation system which consequently leads to a low car ownership rate our traffic pattern proves that car culture is still alive. Every year motor vehicles contribute approximately 11% of the local fine particulate matter and 28% of the nitrogen oxide emissions. The city has been actively finding ways to reduce emissions, but it has not been enough to reduce the rate to a drastic change. The use of electric cars and solar cars though could see a much more pronounced change in the pollution rates. We could also see a transition of public transportation from gas to electric or solar vehicles. Electric cars at the moment are quite expensive for the average person but what if auto companies could come up with an agreement with our state to facilitate the financing of these cars. We could potentially see a remarkable decline in our pollution rates if NYC could birth and implement such a plan and consequently leading other state to cleaner future.
